The recent launch of the AI Agriculture Ecosystem in Abu Dhabi on December 8th, 2025, offered a glimpse into this transformative future. This initiative, spearheaded by CGIAR, a global research organization with over five decades of experience working alongside rural communities, aims to revolutionize farming practices.
CGIAR's vast network, encompassing 13 Global Research Centers and countless projects, has amassed a treasure trove of data and expertise. However, and this is the part most people miss, this wealth of knowledge often remains fragmented and inaccessible, locked within siloed systems. Enter the power of AI. By partnering with leading AI companies like ai71, CGIAR is unlocking this data, transforming it into actionable insights delivered directly to farmers through innovative apps and technologies.
These AI-powered tools provide farmers with real-time guidance on crucial aspects like planting schedules, weather patterns, early warning systems, and resource management. Imagine a farmer in a remote village receiving personalized advice on crop selection based on predicted weather patterns, or being alerted to potential pest infestations before they become devastating. This is the power of AI in agriculture.
Ismahane Elouafi, CGIAR’s Executive Managing Director, emphasizes the collaborative nature of this endeavor: “The AI Agriculture Ecosystem is rooted in science and powered by global collaboration. By combining AI expertise from diverse partners, we can develop solutions that strengthen decision-making, guide policies, and accelerate the adoption of digital tools, ultimately supporting vulnerable communities worldwide.”
The Abu Dhabi launch showcased several remarkable AI breakthroughs, including CGIAR’s new AI Hub. This collaborative digital workspace, developed in partnership with ai71, serves as a breeding ground for AI innovations. It provides a unified platform where experts from various sectors can share knowledge, collaborate, and develop agricultural solutions, making data accessible and ready for AI integration.
Her Excellency Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the UAE Presidential Court, highlighted the UAE's commitment to leveraging AI for global good: “The UAE is harnessing artificial intelligence to protect farmers and communities most vulnerable to climate volatility. By combining our national research and AI capabilities with leading global partners, we are translating scientific advancements into tangible tools that benefit people on the ground.”
The AI Hub has already yielded impressive results. AgriLLM, an open-source AI model, provides multilingual, real-time digital advisory services, connecting farmers, advisors, and policymakers. The IWMI’s AI-Water Project focuses on water governance and integrated planning, strengthening farmer resilience against droughts and floods. A global dashboard for this project is currently under development for the 2026 UN Water Conference. Furthermore, the AI Genebank platform accelerates crop improvement by rapidly screening plant samples for climate-resilient traits, linking them to crop research through an interactive chatbot.
Sandra Milach emphasizes the crucial role of partnerships: “Partnerships are the cornerstone of food systems transformation. The AI Hub brings together world-leading AI expertise to boost digital capacity, drive innovation, and unlock transformative tools to support farmers on the frontlines of the agricultural crisis.”
The launch of Abu Dhabi’s AI for Agriculture Ecosystem marks a pivotal moment in the global fight for food security. Building upon the USD 200 million UAE-Gates Foundation partnership announced at COP28, this initiative has already resulted in four landmark projects: the Institute for Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (IA|AI), the CGIAR AI Hub, AgriLLM, and AIM for Scale. This ecosystem is built upon a strong alliance between the International Affairs Office at the UAE Presidential Court, four Abu Dhabi-based institutions, and international partners like the Gates Foundation, CGIAR, the World Bank, and others.
