The cloud computing giants have just joined forces—and it could change the way the internet works. Amazon and Google, two of the world’s biggest tech players, have teamed up to launch a powerful new multicloud service designed to deliver ultra-fast, private connections between their cloud platforms. This move comes at a time when even a short internet outage can ripple across the globe, crippling businesses and disrupting essential online services.
Announced on Sunday, the collaboration between Amazon (AMZN.O) and Google (GOOGL.O) aims to give organizations the ability to link their Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud environments within minutes, rather than waiting weeks for traditional setups. The companies say this will make it easier—and much faster—for customers to transfer data, run applications, and strengthen network reliability.
But here’s where it gets controversial: the launch follows closely on the heels of a major AWS outage on October 20 that temporarily knocked offline thousands of websites, including popular platforms like Snapchat and Reddit. That single incident is estimated to have cost U.S. businesses between $500 million and $650 million in losses, according to analytics firm Parametrix. The new joint offering fuses AWS’s Interconnect–multicloud with Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect, creating a more seamless bridge between the two rival ecosystems. Interestingly, Salesforce (CRM.N) has already signed on as one of the early adopters—a sign that this new model may gain traction quickly among large enterprises seeking more flexibility and control.
AWS remains the global leader in cloud services, offering computing power, storage, and enterprise-grade digital infrastructure for businesses, governments, and individual developers. It’s followed by Microsoft’s Azure (MSFT.O) and Google Cloud, which continue to compete for market share amid surging demand driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and data-heavy online applications. With AI rapidly increasing the strain on networks, these companies are pouring billions of dollars into strengthening their digital backbones to meet soaring global traffic.
Amazon’s cloud division delivered standout performance in the latest quarter, posting $33 billion in revenue—more than double Google Cloud’s $15.16 billion for the same period. That kind of growth underscores not only AWS’s dominance but also the massive stakes driving new alliances like this one.
