Ballina residents, brace yourselves: essential water network upgrades are on the horizon, promising a boost in capacity but also potential traffic snarls. This is all part of a crucial project designed to support Ballina's future expansion and development.
Uisce Éireann is spearheading a program to upgrade the town's water mains, according to Programme Manager Donal O’Connor. These upgrades are vital for accommodating future residential growth, ensuring that the water supply can keep pace with Ballina's expansion.
The work will be concentrated on McDermott Street and Gurteens, involving the laying of over 1.4 kilometers of new pipelines.
The project is split into two phases. The first phase kicks off on Monday, November 24th, and involves installing approximately 310 meters of new pipes. This section runs from the reservoir at Gurteens along the L1119 to the intersection of McDermott Street and Fenian Row. Expect delays: traffic management, including a traffic light system, will be in place from November 24th until mid-December.
The second phase will then continue down McDermott Street, reaching its junction with Teeling Street. This is scheduled to begin in late spring of 2026.
Heads up, Ballina! These upgrades might lead to short-term water interruptions. However, the project team assures that customers will be notified at least 48 hours in advance of any planned service disruptions.
But here's where it gets interesting... While these upgrades are undoubtedly necessary, they also come with a degree of inconvenience. What are your thoughts on the timing and potential disruption?
