Get ready to grab your tissues and your best friend, because Beaches, the beloved story of lifelong friendship, is finally hitting Broadway—and it’s going to be epic. But here’s where it gets controversial: Can a stage musical truly capture the magic of the iconic 1988 film? Fans are divided, but one thing’s for sure—this production is pulling out all the stops to make it unforgettable.**
After a sold-out international debut at Theatre Calgary in Alberta, Canada, in 2024, Beaches: A New Musical is set to light up Broadway’s Majestic Theatre this spring. The limited New York run kicks off a multi-city national tour, giving audiences across the country a chance to experience this heartfelt tale live. Previews begin on Friday, March 27, 2026, with an official opening night scheduled for Wednesday, April 22. The Broadway engagement wraps up on Sunday, September 6, 2026, before the show hits the road.
Co-directed by the dynamic duo of Tony Award nominee and Emmy winner Lonny Price (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, Sunset Boulevard) and Matt Cowart (Associate Director, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill), the musical stars Jessica Vosk (Hell’s Kitchen, Wicked) as the bold and vivacious Cee Cee—a role originally played by Bette Midler in the film. Opposite her is Kelli Barrett (Fosse/Verdon, Parade), who steps into the elegant shoes of Bertie (named Hillary in the movie, portrayed by Barbara Hershey). And this is the part most people miss: While the film is a classic, the musical brings a fresh perspective, blending nostalgia with new creative elements that might just surprise you.
Adapted from Iris Rainer Dart’s bestselling novel, Beaches chronicles the decades-long friendship between Cee Cee and Bertie, complete with their joys, heartbreaks, and occasional fallouts. The musical features a score by Grammy-winning legend Mike Stoller, lyrics by Iris Rainer Dart herself, and a book co-written by Dart and Thom Thomas. Developed in collaboration with David Austin, the production promises to be a celebration of enduring bonds.
The creative team behind the scenes is equally impressive. Choreography by Jennifer Rias, orchestrations by Charlie Rosen, and scenic design by James Noone set the stage for a visually stunning experience. Tracy Christensen handles costume design, Ken Billington lighting, Kai Harada sound, David Bengali projections, and J. Jared Janas wig, hair, and makeup. Together, they’re crafting a world that feels both timeless and fresh.
Originally, producers planned to launch a national tour in 2026 before a Broadway run, but the availability of the Majestic Theatre prompted a change in strategy. Now, New York audiences get the first look before the show travels the country. Beaches: A New Musical is produced by Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso, Douglas McJannet (Arden Entertainment), Alison Spiriti & Justin Sudds (Right Angle Entertainment), Ryan Bogner & Tracey McFarland (Broadway & Beyond Theatricals), and Crossroads Live, who will helm the national tour.
It’s worth noting that earlier musical adaptations of Beaches were staged in 2014 and 2015, but with entirely different creative teams and casts. This new version, however, feels like a labor of love, aiming to honor the story while adding its own unique flair.
Here’s the question we’re all thinking: Can this stage adaptation live up to the emotional punch of the film? Or will it carve out its own place in the hearts of audiences? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—we’re eager to hear if you’re team film, team musical, or somewhere in between!
