Other parents shared similar sentiments, mentioning how they had taken time off work to support their children during remote learning days, only to find out those days would be made up later.

But here's where it gets controversial... Kevin Nowell argues that the district is shifting the burden onto families while retaining the option to extend the school year. He questions the fairness of such an arrangement.
Daniel Brown agrees, emphasizing the short notice given to parents. "Why the sudden need to make up days so quickly? It's not easy for parents to rearrange their schedules on such short notice," he wrote.
The Legal Perspective
News 13 reached out to Buncombe County Schools for an interview, but they were unavailable. District officials revealed they had lost 24 instructional hours, leaving them just above the state-mandated minimum of 1,025 hours.
The district's decision to have full school days on Thursday and Friday was influenced by this legal requirement.
Other Districts' Predicaments
And this is the part most people miss... Other districts in the area are also closely monitoring the weather forecast. They are considering the potential impact of further winter storms on their school calendars.
Lisa Fletcher, superintendent of Transylvania County Schools, shared her thoughts: "If we don't get any more snow or bad weather, we should be fine. But if we do, we might have to consider losing a workday, extending the year, or even having Saturday school."
Fletcher added that there could be some flexibility moving forward, hoping for a state waiver for the missed days due to the storms.
