A suspect in the murder of high-profile conservative activist Charlie Kirk faced his first in-person court appearance, as a judge weighs how much media access should be allowed in this high-profile case.
Tyler Robinson, 22, stands accused of aggravated murder along with additional charges, and prosecutors say they are seeking the death penalty. Robinson has yet to enter a plea. His arrival in court came after a lengthy manhunt following the September shooting at an open-air event at Utah Valley University. He surrendered after his father, who recognized him from images released by authorities, urged him to do so and Robinson admitted to the crime.
Robinson appeared in court with his wrists and ankles restrained. He wore a dress shirt, tie, and slacks, and he smiled at family members seated in the front row, including his mother, father, and brother, as reported by CBS, the BBC’s U.S. partner.
A coalition representing national and local news outlets is pushing for continued media access to the case, advocating for transparency and public accountability. They are seeking the release of a recording and transcript from an October hearing that was not open to the public. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, is also calling for transparency and has publicly defended the push for cameras in the courtroom, stating on Fox News that the public deserves access.
During the Thursday hearing, attention was focused on a 14 October audio recording and a 24 October transcript from hearings that were closed to the public, with another portion of the hearing broadcast online for public viewing. Judge Tony Graf indicated that he needs to determine what should be sealed or protected and suggested that it would not be beneficial for everyone to listen to material that may be sealed. He planned to issue a ruling later on Thursday.
In October, the judge allowed Robinson to wear civilian clothes during pre-trial hearings to avoid prejudicing jurors, while still requiring restraints during these proceedings. Photos or videos depicting him in restraints are not permitted.
