Enhance Your Webcam with a Screen-Powered Ring Light: Camo Streamlight Review (2026)

Windows finally gets its own screen-based ring light through a new app—and it already performs better than many expected. When Apple ports a third-party feature into a native macOS experience, we call it Sherlocking. But what do you call it when a third-party developer brings a standout macOS feature to Windows? I don’t have a perfect term, but here’s a brilliant example worth discussing.

Camo Streamlight (https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pgf25tc7z0t?hl=en-US&gl=GB) is a fresh Windows app that illuminates your screen to boost camera image quality. It resembles Edge Light, which is currently in testing on macOS, yet the Camo Streamlight team adds extra features that could make Apple rethink its own approach—and the best part: it’s free.

I tested Camo Streamlight today under several lighting conditions. I captured still images, recorded video, and even had a colleague evaluate my image quality during a video call.

I used a Dell UltraSharp Webcam from 2021. While not the latest model, it still performs well. My laptop screen can reach up to 600 nits of brightness and supports HDR, enabling surprisingly vivid lighting.

The app makes switching between modes seamless. In any mode, you can adjust the illuminated area size, dial in the virtual ring light’s brightness, and fine‑tune the light’s hue or temperature depending on the selected mode.

The results are genuinely impressive. The extra lighting helps keep my face visible and clear in dark rooms, or adds detail by reducing shadows in brighter rooms during video calls.

Light output will vary with different screens. On a large HDR display, you should see a noticeable improvement in lighting for video conferencing and streaming.

But here’s where the controversy begins: is this exactly the kind of enhancement Windows users have been asking for, or does it duplicate what built‑in camera software should already provide? And this is the part most people miss: how much value does third‑party lighting add in real‑world daily calls versus simply relying on a better webcam or room lighting? Share your take in the comments—do you value software‑driven lighting enhancements, or do you prefer hardware upgrades? Would you consider adopting Camo Streamlight on your setup, or do you think native OS features should render such tools unnecessary?
