The Great Rift Valley, a geological wonder, holds the key to Ethiopia's energy future. With an estimated geothermal potential of over 1,000 MW, this natural resource could revolutionize the country's electricity mix. Imagine a stable and continuous power supply with a capacity factor exceeding 90%. This could mean a massive reduction in the need for imported diesel, which currently stands at a staggering 500 million liters annually.
The government has identified several strategic projects to unlock this potential. Tulu Moye is leading the charge with a 150 MW development, starting with a 50 MW phase driven by private investors. Meanwhile, Aluto Langano, Ethiopia's pioneer in geothermal energy, is set to expand its capacity tenfold from 7.3 MW to 75 MW. This expansion is made possible through regional collaboration, as demonstrated by Kenya Electricity Generating Company's (KenGen) drilling efforts at the site.
