In an exciting development for the local community, plans for a new bookshop and café, spearheaded by renowned television architect George Clarke, have received the green light. Clarke, who hails from Washington, is set to transform a historic Grade II listed building located on High Street West, adjacent to Sonny's and Pop Recs in Sunderland.
The Sunderland City Council has expressed optimism about this initiative, stating that it will enhance foot traffic in the area, improve the quality of the physical environment, and significantly contribute to the vibrancy and character of the Sunniside neighborhood.
This project, aptly named Home of Books, reflects Clarke's passion for literature and architectural restoration while allowing him to spend more time in his hometown. The upper levels of the building are envisioned to be converted into an apartment for Clarke and his family, but they will also be available as boutique accommodation for short-term visitors.
Pending final planning permissions, Clarke anticipates that Home of Books will open its doors in 2026. The proposed renovations include restoring the original shopfront, modifying openings, reinstating Georgian-style joinery, remodeling the rear extension, installing new windows, and adding internal staircases.
According to the council's report on the decision, this venture will make a significant addition to the evolving cultural and creative landscape of Sunniside. Alongside the bookshop, there are plans for a cozy café and wine bar, along with a new refuse and cycle storage area.
Moreover, the upper floors will feature a spacious four-bedroom apartment, which Clarke describes as "a tranquil, well-designed space"—a personal retreat when he visits Sunderland and a potential hub for visiting writers, artists, and others engaged in the city's vibrant creative scene.
Clarke remarked, "Sunderland is undergoing remarkable changes, and I hope that Home of Books can contribute to this transformation, blending the city's rich history with new stories, fresh ideas, and the people who bring them to life."
