According to a leading fertility doctor, six out of every ten couples seeking assistance are not first-time parents, but rather, they're hoping to expand their families.
The statistics are eye-opening: the number of births to women in their late 40s has skyrocketed, with a record-breaking 408 babies born to mothers aged 45 and over in 2023. That's an 80% increase compared to a decade ago!
So, what's behind this surge? Dr. Ahmed Omar, medical director at Beacon Care Fertility, attributes it to two key factors. Firstly, the success of IVF treatment using donor eggs, typically sourced from younger women under 35, has given hope to many. Secondly, the increasing popularity of egg freezing has allowed women to preserve their fertility potential for the future.
Dr. Omar estimates that donor eggs play a significant role, accounting for a substantial portion of the rise in older births. He highlights the challenge of age-related fertility decline, emphasizing that while science has advanced, female biology hasn't changed. The number and quality of eggs decrease with age, making it increasingly difficult for women to conceive naturally.
But here's where it gets even more fascinating: freezing and storage techniques have revolutionized fertility treatment. Dr. Omar explains that due to improved freezing methods and lab environments, more babies are now born from frozen embryos than from fresh transfers.
Women in their 40s are increasingly utilizing assisted reproduction to complete their families, rather than starting them. Dr. Omar shares, "Something we didn't see as much a decade ago is couples or women completing their families through assisted reproduction because of freezing. Now, women are having second or third babies because they can freeze their embryos."
The trend is clear: couples are starting their families later in life, often in their mid-to-late 30s, due to educational pursuits and career establishment. As a result, by the time they're trying for their second child, they may be in their 40s, facing new challenges.
The average age at childbirth has risen significantly, from 29 in the early 1970s to just over 33 today. In the past decade alone, births to women aged 40 and over have increased by almost 25%, reaching nearly 5,000 last year.
Affordability is also a factor, as Dr. Omar points out. Fertility treatment has traditionally been privately funded, making it accessible only to those who can afford it, especially in cities like Dublin.
And this is the part most people miss: the role of celebrities in bringing older motherhood into the spotlight. Janet Jackson's pregnancy at 50 and Naomi Campbell's announcement of becoming a mother at 50 have undoubtedly influenced public perception.
However, Dr. Omar emphasizes that pregnancies in the late 40s and 50s using a woman's own eggs are extremely rare. He highlights the importance of understanding the limits of fertility with age.
Currently, there is no legal cut-off age for women receiving assisted reproduction in Ireland, but Dr. Omar hopes the new Assisted Human Reproduction Regulatory Authority will introduce national guidelines to provide clarity and support for those seeking fertility treatment.
