Nelly Korda takes the lead at the TOC, but high winds and freezing temperatures disrupt play.
Nelly Korda, the Florida native, showcased her resilience as she navigated the challenging conditions at the LPGA's Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions on Saturday. Despite the dropping temperatures and escalating winds, Korda remained unfazed, posting an impressive 8-under 64 and rising to the top of the leaderboard.
Korda, who started the day three strokes behind the lead, now sits at 13 under through three rounds, solidifying her position as the clubhouse leader. However, the third round was suspended at 4:18 p.m. ET due to unplayable conditions on the 17th hole, with high winds making it impossible for players to continue.
The situation sparked controversy, as some players, including Korda and Brooke Henderson, were already in the clubhouse. LPGA officials announced that play would resume at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, with temperatures expected to drop to around 30 degrees. This means Korda will not be part of the final threesome, as there will be no regrouping from Round 3.
The frigid temperatures and strong winds significantly impacted the schedule, affecting the completion of Round 3 and the start of the final round. Amy Rogers, reporting from Lake Nona, highlighted the challenges faced by players like Amy Yang and Youmin Hwang, who were unable to finish the 17th hole due to the wind. Hwang's last putt on the 17th hole led to the suspension, as her ball rolled past the hole and down the slope.
Korda herself admitted that the wind and temperatures put her in 'survival mode' during the final four holes. She described holes 15, 16, 17, and 18 as 'brutal' once exposed to the wind, especially the north-blowing gusts.
The 17th green, in particular, was deemed unplayable due to its exposure to the water and the strong gusts. Korda's ball was oscillating during her putt on the 17th, showcasing the difficulty of the conditions.
The LPGA made adjustments to the schedule for Sunday, ensuring no amateurs would play the final round. The field was trimmed to 60 players, and start times were bumped back. The Tournament of Champions' broadcast schedule for Sunday was announced, with Peacock, NBC, and Golf Channel covering the event.
