After a Lengthy Search, OHSU Health Announces New CEO
In a significant development for the healthcare sector, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has finally appointed a new CEO following a prolonged search process. This announcement comes after a challenging period marked by leadership transitions and interim hires.
Tarek Salaway, a seasoned executive with a remarkable 28 years of experience in healthcare leadership, has been chosen for this pivotal role. His expertise lies in successfully navigating diverse healthcare systems across major west coast markets, particularly in the San Francisco Bay area, where he most recently worked for Kaiser Permanente.
OHSU President Shereef Elnahal expressed his confidence in Salaway's abilities, highlighting his track record in developing and implementing strategic initiatives. Elnahal stated, 'Mr. Salaway's extensive leadership experience and proven success in advancing high-value clinical programs make him an ideal candidate to lead OHSU Health during this exciting time of transformation and commitment to our communities.'
The search for a new CEO began in early 2024 when John Hunter, the long-serving CEO, announced his retirement. This marked the start of a challenging journey for OHSU Health, with several interim leaders stepping in during the subsequent months. Joe Ness, the COO, took on the role temporarily, followed by Ann Madden Rice, who unfortunately lasted only five weeks before leaving.
Tim Goldfarb, a former OHSU Health CEO, was then appointed as the interim CEO to stabilize the situation. This series of leadership changes underscores the complexity of the search process and the importance of finding the right candidate.
Salaway's appointment is the culmination of an extensive national search, as Elnahal confirmed. His first day at OHSU Health is set for December 15th, and he expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'I am honored to join the exceptional leadership team at OHSU Health, a time filled with excitement, transformation, and a deep commitment to serving our communities across Oregon.'
This appointment marks a new chapter for OHSU Health, with the potential to bring about significant improvements and advancements in healthcare services across Oregon.
