Can a newcomer really dethrone the king? That's the burning question as we pit the OnePlus 15 against the mighty iPhone 17 Pro Max in a no-holds-barred camera showdown! The OnePlus 15, with its revolutionary battery promising days of power, is making waves. But does it have the photographic chops to compete with the established champion? Let's find out.
We subjected these two titans to a rigorous 10-round camera face-off, analyzing everything from color accuracy to zoom capabilities. Buckle up, because the results might surprise you.
The OnePlus 15 represents a significant departure for the company. They've amped up the zoom and, perhaps most notably, ended their collaboration with Hasselblad. Instead, OnePlus is betting on its own image processing tech, dubbed "DetailMax." Will this in-house solution deliver the goods? Or will the iPhone's proven performance reign supreme?
Round 1: Main Camera
The iPhone 17 Pro Max, like its predecessors, cleverly captures 24MP images by default, even with its 48MP sensor. This is a common technique that balances detail and file size. The OnePlus 15, on the other hand, defaults to 12MP. But here's where it gets interesting... You can easily switch it to a 26MP default in the camera settings. To ensure a fair fight, I made that adjustment before snapping our test shots.
Our subject: a charming stone planter brimming with flowers. At first glance, the OnePlus image appears cooler in tone compared to the iPhone's warmer rendition. But look closer! The OnePlus seems to have an edge in sharpness, likely thanks to its slightly higher resolution. For instance, you can almost make out the delicate spiderwebs clinging to the flowers – details that are barely visible in the iPhone's shot.
Round 2: 2x Zoom
For our 2x zoom test, we focused on a cappuccino, a classic test of detail and color rendering. Once again, a distinct color difference emerges. The OnePlus seems to prioritize the milk foam, resulting in a slightly overexposed cup. The iPhone, in contrast, achieves a better balance of light, revealing more detail on the side of the cup.
Focus-wise, both phones perform admirably, leveraging in-sensor cropping to zoom in without significant loss of quality. You can even see the tiny microbubbles in the foam! The iPhone 17 Pro Max, however, edges ahead with slightly more detail and a more visually pleasing overall image.
Round 3: Max Resolution
Time to unleash the full potential! We cranked both phones up to their maximum resolution – 50MP for the OnePlus and 48MP for the iPhone – and aimed them at the picturesque Italian Gardens in Hyde Park. And this is the part most people miss... Shooting at max resolution isn't always the best choice. It increases file size and can sometimes introduce noise. But for this test, it's crucial.
The results? The iPhone image bursts with color, capturing the vibrant hues of the gardens. The OnePlus, comparatively, renders a somewhat grey and muted scene. Zooming in on the water fountains, the iPhone further demonstrates its superiority, clearly defining individual water droplets. The OnePlus image, in contrast, appears a bit "mushy."
Round 4: HDR (High Dynamic Range)
Our HDR test took place at night, capturing a carved wall illuminated by strong streetlights. This scenario presents a significant challenge, requiring the phones to handle extreme light and dark areas simultaneously. Neither phone had night mode enabled.
Both phones successfully captured the linework of the carving and the texture of the brickwork. However, the iPhone 17 Pro Max delivers greater depth and contrast. The OnePlus seems to have focused intently on the light streaming through the railings, creating a dramatically different tone compared to the iPhone. This is where things get controversial! Some might prefer the OnePlus's more dramatic interpretation, while others will favor the iPhone's balanced approach. Which do you prefer?
Round 5: Night Mode
We turned our attention to Wellington Arch after sunset. The OnePlus shot appears noticeably darker, while the iPhone brightens the scene to reveal more detail. The iPhone 17 Pro Max achieves a more balanced exposure, making the main subject more visible.
While the statue atop the arch and the carvings on its side are more prominent in the iPhone image, the shadows in the OnePlus shot appear more natural. Some might actually prefer the OnePlus's moodier aesthetic.
Round 6: Ultrawide
A statue of cuddling bears served as our subject for the ultrawide camera comparison. The iPhone 17 Pro Max captures more detail in the sculpture's texture, while the OnePlus 15's shot is brighter, giving the bears a shinier appearance.
Here's where things took an unexpected turn... The OnePlus's ultrawide performance proved to be strangely inconsistent. Half of the photos resembled the one described above, while the other half were significantly overexposed, losing detail and introducing harsh highlights. This inconsistency raises serious concerns about reliability.
Round 7: Macro
We moved in close to some vibrant pink flowers to test the macro capabilities, typically enabled by the ultrawide cameras on premium smartphones.
The iPhone produces cooler colors, while the OnePlus captures warmer tones. Interestingly, the OnePlus image exhibits more detail and better-balanced colors, revealing more of the brightly lit petals than the iPhone.
Round 8: Selfie
Time for some portrait mode selfies! Both phones captured similar, yet distinct, images of yours truly.
The warmer iPhone shot aligns with my preferred (or at least, accustomed) selfie aesthetic, complete with a well-defined portrait cutout. The OnePlus's portrait effect features a gentler bokeh, resulting in a darker, shadowier, and cooler image. However, it's still a respectable selfie, and, crucially, it managed to keep my glasses intact – a feat many phones struggle with!
Round 9: Optical Zoom
We conclude with a two-part telephoto camera showdown. The iPhone boasts a 4x optical zoom, while the OnePlus offers a 3.5x zoom. We aimed both phones at a church steeple to assess their maximum optical zoom performance.
The iPhone's image appears darker in the center, while the OnePlus's is brighter, revealing more detail in the steeple's tiles. This difference could be attributed to the OnePlus's slightly less aggressive zoom, allowing it to balance the image against the bright sky. Overall, I find the OnePlus image more appealing.
Round 10: Hybrid Zoom
Pushing both phones to their maximum lossless zoom levels (7x on the OnePlus, 8x on the iPhone), achieved through a combination of physical and digital magnification, we closed in further on the steeple.
Beyond the increased magnification, there's little to differentiate these shots. The steeple remains darker in the iPhone image and brighter in the OnePlus image, giving the Android phone a slight edge in detail.
The Verdict
Frankly, I was surprised by how close this competition was. Given OnePlus's past camera performance and the absence of Hasselblad's expertise, I expected a more decisive victory for the iPhone. Reaching a conclusion required careful consideration.
The OnePlus's tendency to brighten shots can be advantageous in certain situations, but it can also lead to muddy images. And when it goes dark, it goes really dark, as demonstrated by the nighttime comparison, resulting in some dramatic-looking shots.
If it weren't for the bizarre inconsistency I encountered with the ultrawide camera, I'd be tempted to declare the OnePlus 15 the winner. However, the iPhone 17 Pro Max's consistent performance allows it to claim yet another victory for Apple.
What do you think? Does consistency win out over occasional brilliance? Did the ultrawide issue unfairly tip the scales? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
