The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is shaking up the cricket world with a bold move that’s set to redefine how teams build their rosters. Gone are the days of the draft system—welcome to the era of player auctions. According to an official statement, the goal is to 'enhance competitive balance, increase transparency, and provide players with greater earning opportunities.' Sounds promising, right? One of the most significant changes is in player retention rules. Previously, each of the six franchises could retain up to eight players from the previous season. However, with the introduction of two new teams—Hyderabad and Sialkot—this system became unsustainable. Tensions flared at a recent general council meeting, with existing teams wanting to keep their star players and new franchises demanding access to top talent. The PSL’s solution? A middle ground that slashes retention numbers in half. Now, teams can retain only four players, with a strict limit of one player per category (Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver). For instance, if Lahore Qalandars want to keep both Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, they’ll need to ensure these players aren’t in the same category—a tricky balancing act.
Unpicked players will then enter an open pool, giving Hyderabad and Sialkot a chance to sign four players each before the auction begins. This move aims to put all six franchises on equal footing. But here’s the twist: it’s still unclear whether these signings will follow a draft-style system or another method. Additionally, each team can now sign one player directly, outside the auction, with team purses increased to USD 1.6 million from USD 1.1 million. Direct signings, however, are limited to players who didn’t participate in the PSL last season.
These reforms are the most dramatic changes to the PSL’s player recruitment structure in its history. They’re expected to trigger the largest player migration between teams ever seen, thanks to the drastically reduced retention rules. Interestingly, some of these changes faced resistance in earlier meetings between PCB officials and franchises, which is why the final decision came relatively late.
As of now, the auction date remains unconfirmed, as does the ownership structure of the Multan Sultans. Initially, the PCB planned to manage the team after owner Ali Tareen stepped away, but they later decided to auction it off after Hyderabad and Sialkot’s selling prices exceeded expectations. The deadline for technical bids is January 30, adding another layer of intrigue to this evolving story.
