When you think of Australian sports, sun-drenched cricket matches and muddy winter footy games probably come to mind. Aussies wear their ability to endure the elements like a badge of honor. But here’s where it gets controversial: Why hasn’t ice hockey, with its bone-chilling rinks, lightning-fast pace, and bone-crushing hits, captured the nation’s heart? Tucked away in frosty arenas, ice hockey in Australia has long flown under the radar. Yet, something is shifting. The sport is quietly gaining momentum, and Matt Armstrong, a pillar of Melbourne’s ice hockey scene, couldn’t be more excited. ‘It’s like an underground movement,’ he explains. ‘Once you discover it, you’re hooked.’
Armstrong has been at the forefront of this transformation since 2010, when he joined the O’Brien Icehouse Hockey Academy. Back then, the academy offered just two classes. Fast forward to today, and Armstrong now leads the program, which has grown exponentially. ‘We now have over 1,200 students annually,’ he says. ‘We host hockey camps, bring in international coaches, and strive to give Australian players every opportunity to excel.’
And this is the part most people miss: It’s not just kids lacing up their skates. Adult participation is booming, with ‘beer leagues’—a term borrowed from North America—skyrocketing in popularity. IceHQ in Reservoir now boasts over 10 divisions, catering to young professionals and adults who’ve caught the hockey bug.
‘In North America, kids grow up with the sport, experimenting with colorful laces and tape,’ Armstrong notes. ‘Here, it’s the young professionals and adults driving the growth.’ With limited funding and a heavy reliance on volunteers, word of mouth has become the sport’s lifeblood. ‘Unless you have a mate who’s into it, you might never hear about it,’ Armstrong admits. ‘It’s not trending on social media, but we’re working to change that.’
Visibility is key, and international exposure is helping. The Winter Olympics always sparks interest, and Armstrong anticipates another surge after this year’s Games in Milano-Cortina. Thanks to the 2023 Global Series in Melbourne, the NHL is more accessible than ever, with every game streaming live on Disney+. Meanwhile, the PWHL (Professional Women’s Hockey League) streams games for free on YouTube, further broadening the sport’s reach.
Pop culture is also playing its part. Heated Rivalry, the viral gay hockey romance, has thrust the sport into the Australian spotlight, flooding social media and sparking genuine curiosity. Films like The Mighty Ducks have long served a similar purpose: once people’s interest is piqued, they seek out local games.
Christina Julien, a dual-sport athlete who’s played for Melbourne Ice Women in the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (affectionately called the ‘A-Dub’) for nearly a decade, has been instrumental in growing women’s hockey. She describes a league that’s more vibrant than ever. ‘During our first Melbourne derby, I looked up and saw a sold-out stadium,’ she recalls. ‘People were having a blast. It’s incredible to see that energy spilling into regular season games now.’
Melbourne’s three rinks—shared among ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, and curling—are constantly in demand, but this shared space fosters a tight-knit community. ‘Everyone knows everyone at the rink,’ Julien says. ‘It’s a close-knit world, and that camaraderie is special.’
Ice hockey in Australia is a labor of love, and attending a game is to witness that passion in full force. The skill on the ice is undeniable, but it’s the fans in the stands—decked out in jerseys from North American, European, and even fictional teams—that steal the show. It’s a kaleidoscope of color, a living tribute to the sport, and it’s impossible not to get swept up in it.
‘The beauty of Australia is that when people discover ice hockey, they’re often amazed,’ Julien reflects. ‘There’s a good chance you’ll fall in love with it.’
